Nintendo just officially confirmed a major hardware shift for its latest console. The company is releasing a revised Nintendo Switch 2 model in Europe later this year. Simultaneously, US buyers will face a steep price increase starting this September.
Nintendo Switch 2 US Price Hike & Free Game Bundles
In a rare move, Nintendo is making its console more expensive in the middle of a generation. Starting September 1, the US price for the Switch 2 will jump to $499.99. Nintendo blames this hike on an ongoing RAM crisis and other economic factors.
However, the company is trying to soften the blow for new buyers. Anyone purchasing the console at the new price will get a free bundled game. Buyers can choose between Mario Kart World, Pokémon Pokopia, or Donkey Kong Bananza.
Europe’s New Replaceable Battery Mandate
Meanwhile, European gamers will receive a slightly different console this fall. Nintendo is altering the hardware specifically to comply with Europe’s new battery regulations.
Therefore, the revised Switch 2 will feature a user-replaceable battery. As a trade-off, this new battery is 1% smaller in capacity. Additionally, the console itself will weigh 10g more than the current launch model. Furthermore, the bundled Joy-Con 2 controllers will also include user-replaceable batteries.
Currently, Nintendo has not revealed any official images of this new design. The company also has no official plans to release this specific hardware revision outside of Europe.
Controller Updates & Holiday Games
Beyond the main console, Nintendo is updating several key accessories. This winter, the Switch 2 Pro Controller will receive a replaceable battery update. Later, in early 2027, Nintendo will launch updated versions of the wireless Nintendo 64 and GameCube controllers.
Finally, Nintendo is preparing a massive software push for the holiday season. A highly anticipated Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake launches this fall. Furthermore, several other major exclusive games will be released between now and the holidays to drive hardware sales.
