Pakistan and China are expected to sign more than 100 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth around US$5 billion during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit to China from May 24 to 26, marking one of the largest bilateral cooperation packages in recent years.
According to official sources, nearly 90 percent of the agreements will be business-to-business arrangements, highlighting growing private sector engagement between the two countries. The remaining 10 percent will be government-to-business deals. Preparations for the signing ceremonies and related meetings have reportedly been finalized.
During the visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. Discussions will focus on expanding economic cooperation, increasing investment flows, and reviewing regional and security developments.
The proposed agreements span multiple sectors, with agriculture expected to receive significant attention. Areas of cooperation include agri-processing, poultry and dairy farming, fruit and vegetable processing, fisheries, animal vaccines, cold chain logistics, fertilizers, seeds, and agricultural chemicals. These initiatives aim to strengthen Pakistan’s agricultural value chain and improve productivity through technology transfer.
Technology and industrial development will also feature prominently, with expected agreements in IT, fintech, e-commerce, cloud computing, telecommunications, and advanced manufacturing.
Additional cooperation is anticipated in electric vehicle components, mobile phone manufacturing, and battery production, as Pakistan seeks to advance its industrial modernization agenda.
China remains Pakistan’s largest bilateral investor, with cumulative investments under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) exceeding $25 billion since 2015. The new agreements are expected to further expand private sector participation beyond traditional infrastructure projects.
To oversee implementation, the government has formed a high-level committee headed by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan, tasked with monitoring progress and ensuring timely execution of the agreements.
