Pakistan is moving to strengthen oversight of its rapidly expanding electric vehicle sector by introducing an international-standard testing and verification system for EV batteries.
The decision follows concerns that some manufacturers may be using low-quality or uncertified batteries, raising safety, performance, and reliability issues for consumers. As EV adoption accelerates due to rising fuel prices and government-backed clean transportation goals, regulators are seeking to ensure that quality standards keep pace with market growth.
Under the proposed framework, manufacturers and importers could face mandatory certification requirements, periodic inspections, and stricter compliance checks. Authorities believe the move will help protect consumers, improve confidence in electric vehicles, and support the long-term development of Pakistan’s EV ecosystem.
The initiative also aligns with broader government plans to encourage electric mobility while ensuring that locally assembled and imported EVs meet internationally accepted safety and performance benchmarks.
