Pakistani Rupee vs US Dollar & Global Currency Market Dynamics
Globally, the Japanese yen held its gains on Thursday. Traders suspect that government authorities drove a sudden, brief surge in the previous session. As a result, this move kept pressure on the dollar ahead of a crucial US jobs report. The yen held steady at 158.88 per US dollar. It jumped 0.9% overnight. Therefore, market participants remain on alert for an official intervention from Tokyo.
Since a rare joint intervention between the US and Japan on July 31, the yen has struggled to find lasting support. It currently faces pressure from wide interest rate differentials, fiscal worries, and spiked energy prices. Furthermore, this recent strength in the yen left the US dollar on the back foot. Against a basket of currencies, the US dollar eased 0.04% to 99.56.
Meanwhile, other major currencies also showed movement in the broader market. The euro rose marginally to $1.1589. Similarly, sterling attempted a bounce from a three-week low and last bought at $1.3482. The Canadian dollar held its overnight gains and stood at C$1.3836. The Bank of Canada kept rates steady on Wednesday. However, the bank explicitly signaled its readiness to tighten policy to rein in inflation.
Oil Prices Edge Lower
Oil prices consistently act as a key indicator of currency parity. On Thursday, oil prices edged lower. Investors currently weigh the uncertainty of renewed military strikes between the US and Iran. These potential conflicts risk disrupting vital oil supplies from the Middle East.
Consequently, Brent crude futures fell 59 cents, or 0.62%. The commodity settled at $95.04 a barrel at 0509 GMT. Similarly, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped 38 cents, or 0.42%. WTI crude ultimately closed the session at $90.63.
