The federal government has taken a major step toward safer digital experiences for young users as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in partnership with Meta, introduced Instagram Teen Accounts. The new feature aims to strengthen online protection for teens nationwide.
The PTA formally launched Instagram Teen Accounts during an event attended by Meta representatives, UNICEF/NCRC officials, and child protection stakeholders. The initiative focuses on equipping teens with safer navigation tools while educating parents and institutions about online security.
The program featured awareness sessions and live demonstrations on digital safety features, reporting mechanisms, and responsible online behavior for younger users. Officials said the initiative reflects a unified commitment to improving youth digital wellbeing in Pakistan.
Under the new system, Instagram will automatically place users under 16 into Teen Accounts, which come with built-in safeguards. These include restrictions on unwanted contact, tighter privacy controls, and filtering of sensitive content, ensuring teens can explore the platform with greater protection.
PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez ur Rehman stated that the rollout of Instagram Teen Accounts is a significant milestone in creating a safer digital ecosystem. He noted that the feature supports the Authority’s wider efforts to enhance the online safety framework for children across the country.
Dr Priyanka Bhalla, Meta’s Head of Safety Policy for South Asia, praised the PTA’s continued support in advancing youth protection online. She added that Meta’s global safety initiatives are enabling millions of teens, including those in Pakistan, to enjoy secure and positive online experiences.
