Punjab has expanded a province-wide police safety and accountability initiative, more than doubling the number of body cameras to be issued to officers from an earlier target of 17,812 to 30,000 units.
The panic button allocation has also been raised from 1,096 to 1,500 devices under the revised plan.
The expansion adds 12,188 body cameras and 404 panic buttons to the programme, requiring an additional Rs1.2124 billion in funding. With the increased quantities, the total cost of equipping Punjab Police with the devices now stands at Rs3.0525 billion.
Officials have set the per-unit price at Rs95,000 for each body camera and Rs135,000 for each panic button.
To help finance the expanded rollout, the Finance Department has proposed covering half of the additional cost through licensing fee revenue collected by traffic police, allocating 13 percent of that income toward the programme.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance transparency and officer safety within Punjab Police, equipping personnel with tools to document field interactions and signal for emergency assistance when needed.
