Excise authorities in Punjab have decided to raise service charges for vehicle registration instead of offering relief to the public, with new fees set to take effect as motorcycles and cars are registered before leaving showrooms.
According to excise officials, the service charge for motorcycle registration has been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000, while the charge for car registration has been raised from Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 across Punjab.
Officials said that all Motor Registration Authorities in the province have been provided with lists of dealers for registration purposes.
Motor Registration Examiners will now contact these dealers to bring them into the registration process. A summary has also been sent to the government proposing a reduction in licensing fees for Dealer Vehicle Registration Services to simplify the process.
Officials further stated that 102 Dealer Vehicle Registration Service licenses have been active across Punjab, including Lahore, for the past 11 years. Of these, 96 dealers are authorized to register motorcycles, while six dealers hold authority to register cars.
Under the new system, all vehicle dealers will be integrated into the Vehicle Registration System to allow on-the-spot registration of cars and motorcycles at the time of purchase. However, the Car Dealers Association has raised concerns over the plan to issue registration licenses to every individual showroom.
