Punjab’s First Underground Metro Train Coming to Lahore

Lahore: The Punjab government has announced plans for Lahore’s first underground metro train system, marking a significant step forward in the city’s transportation infrastructure. As part of ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance urban transit, the government has launched the feasibility and design phase for the highly anticipated Blue Line Metro Train.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed that the project be intensified via Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan in order to accelerate progress. The government aims to improve both performance and visual appeal across Lahore’s transport network, while also displaying its ongoing commitment to developing new sustainable mobility solutions.

Blue Line Metro Train Route

The Blue Line, which runs 27 km from Valencia Town to Babu Sabu Chowk, will pass through significant places including as Johar Town, Faisal Town, Kalma Chowk, Gulberg, Jail Road, and Ferozepur Road. The integration of major commercial and residential centres along this extensive route will enhance the efficiency of daily commuting for thousands of residents.

The initiative is anticipated to serve approximately 250,000 passengers daily, offering a dependable alternative to congested roadways.  The government has established a three-year completion deadline and is utilising cutting-edge construction techniques, such as tunnelling at a rate of six meters per day.

Financial funding is an essential component, as the estimated cost exceeds Rs. 600 billion.  Several international institutions, including those from France, Japan, and China, have expressed interest in funding the initiative.  The entire train line will be constructed underground, assuring minimal disruption to Lahore’s existing infrastructure, which was affirmed in a recent assessment in June 2024, despite the fact that earlier studies in 2016 investigated partial underground routes.

Previously, the Punjab government implemented numerous comparable initiatives in Lahore, including an electric transport service and a tram service.  Electric buses, a hybrid double-decker bus service, and dedicated lanes for bicycles and motorcycles are among the numerous initiatives that have already been executed.
