After the National Assembly’s approval, the Senate has also passed a bill for the establishment of Capital University of Science & Technology in Islamabad.

The university will offer courses in the field of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Bioinformatics and Bio-sciences. Bioinformatics is a relatively unknown term in the Pakistani education field, as students tend to opt for more familiar courses when they apply at universities. However, it is a diverse field and has lot of scope locally and internationally as well. Bioinformatics incorporates molecular biology, computer science and statistics to study biological data. Graduates with a degree in this course can do research work in finding new drugs and cures for diseases. Not only this, the agriculture department in the country also requires people from this field. Needless to say that opportunities for this course are many.

The Senate also announced that after its opening in Islamabad, Capital University campuses will be opened in various other cities as well. Capital University will follow HEC’s standards and offer 4-year Bachelors, 2-year Masters and 3-years PhD. The institute will employ 50 PhD’s and 70 MS qualified teachers.

This is one of the 5 universities (and 36 campuses) that HEC plans to open in next three year. However, what needs to be seen is whether Capital University can provide good quality faculty and education. Here’s hoping that in the race to open institutions everywhere the quality of education is not compromised!
