Now Instagram will tell you how much time you waste on it

Since Google said at the Google IO to include things like usage stats and notification reductions to keep you away from your smartphone much easier. Many companies have adopted this approach and now Facebook-owned company Instagram is planning something similar. TechCrunch found out a code inside the Android app that refers to the “Usage Insights” feature that will show you the time that will show users their “time spent”.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has confirmed this upcoming feature with a tweet that said,

“It’s true. We’re building tools that will help the IG community know more about the time they spend on Instagram any time should be positive and intentional. Understanding how time online impacts people is important, and it’s the responsibility of all companies, to be honest about this. We want to be part of the solution. I take that responsibility seriously.”

With this new feature, Instagram is willing to endure a potential reduction in usage and ad views to serve the mental health of its community. Although it’s an admirable pledge, but we will wait out to see what degree of transparency the company rolls out.

If users know how much of their lives they’re investing in their favorite apps, tech giants such as Instagram could encourage people to adopt healthier habits and avoid the passive, long, anti-social browsing sessions that can harm their well-being.

These features could also help parents keep track of what their kids are doing online. Both might lead people to spend less time on certain apps, but they could be happier with companies like Instagram.
