WhatsApp is finally fixing one of the biggest limitations of its web client. The company is bringing audio and video calling to WhatsApp Web. Users can now make calls directly from their web browser. They do not need to download or install any additional software.
WhatsApp Web is also getting several other calling features. These include screen sharing, message reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab. The new Calls tab will show your full call history. It will also give you quick access to your favorite contacts. Like other WhatsApp calls, calls made through WhatsApp Web are protected by end-to-end encryption. They also have no time limits or additional costs.
WhatsApp is also making it easier to move calls between devices. You can now switch a call from your phone to WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp Desktop. The same feature works in the opposite direction as well. This means you can move a call from WhatsApp Web or Desktop back to your phone.
WhatsApp is also adding more control over people joining calls through call links. When creating a call link, you can select the “Require approval to join” option. With this setting enabled, participants will enter a waiting room. They can join the call only after you approve their entry.
The company is also rolling out noise suppression for calls. The feature removes background noise to help make your voice sound clearer. You can manage noise suppression directly from your in-call settings. This gives users more control over their call experience.
Video calls are also getting an upgrade. WhatsApp says HD video quality will now be available from the first few seconds of a call. Users will no longer have to wait for HD quality to become available during a video call.
WhatsApp says all these features are rolling out “gradually.” The company also expects them to reach everyone “soon.” The update marks a major improvement for WhatsApp Web. It brings the web experience closer to the features already available on WhatsApp’s mobile apps.
