Pakistan officially has 5G. All the major telcos like Jazz and Zong received their licenses in March 2026, and switched on services across selected areas of Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, etc. However, the sad reality is that for most ordinary users, the practical reality of 5G is still some distance away.
The most immediate barrier is device compatibility. Many smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung have not yet released the software patches needed to enable 5G on their phones in Pakistan. Telecom sources say the approval and update process takes time. Operators must formally request that manufacturers enable 5G services on their devices, and that process is expected to take roughly six months. Until those patches arrive, users in 5G coverage zones will see no difference at all.
On the other hand, some devices are already working, or at least have the compatibility. The Samsung A55 series is among the handsets confirmed to be accessing 5G on the network. Across all brands, 103 manufacturers have activated 5G functionality on 2,254 device models in Pakistan.
Speed is the a whole other conversation. The mid-band and high-band spectrum that produces the speeds people associate with 5G is present in the auction allocations, but operators need time to fully deploy equipment, optimize towers, and expand site coverage before those speeds become consistent. Early users report mixed results for even the basic 4G boost that the authorities claim has been added. People online complain that there is no improvement in the existing bandwidth speeds (2G, 3G, 4G or LTE) at all, or if there is any, it is not significant. Officials have confirmed that 4G speeds will also improve to around 20 Mbps as operators roll out the new infrastructure.
PTA officials have said full nationwide stabilization will take roughly two years. Zong has also told media outlets that they plan on making 1000 sites operational by the end of 2026. Which means, for now, 5G in Pakistan is real but uneven, and needs quick but long-term measures.
Unfortunately, whether you can use it depends on your city, your phone, and which tower you are standing near.
