Game developers often use remakes to revisit familiar characters and update them for modern hardware. Recently, ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ remake revealed many new character models. While most designs stay very accurate, one specific character received a massive “glow-up”. Nintendo completely redesigned Kaepora Gaebora, the famous wise owl, for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive.

A Dramatic Visual Makeover & Changing a Frustrating Guide
Fans clearly remember the owl from the original Nintendo 64 version. Originally, the character featured a relatively simple appearance. He had a compact body, a prominent beak, and distinctive facial markings. Most notably, his massive eyebrows served as his defining feature.
However, the remake changes his appearance entirely. The new design looks considerably more elaborate. It features completely different proportions and highly detailed plumage. Furthermore, the owl now wears a softer expression. Consequently, this update dramatically alters the overall impression the character makes.
Kaepora Gaebora plays a very specific role in the classic game. He actively guides Young Link throughout Hyrule and occasionally helps him travel across the map. Over the years, players have found him incredibly memorable. He famously delivers long explanations and constantly asks if Link wants to hear his advice again. Thus, he became a regular source of frustration for many gamers.
Now, the updated appearance gives the owl a noticeably different personality at first glance. However, Nintendo has yet to confirm whether the visual changes will also affect his actual dialogue or behavior.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Follows Ganondorf’s Lead
This situation strongly resembles another recent Zelda redesign. For instance, ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ gave fans the highly popular “rehydrated Ganondorf”. That game successfully demonstrated how Nintendo can dramatically reinterpret an established character while retaining their recognizable features.
The Ocarina of Time remake takes a similar approach with the wise owl, albeit without the hydration. Ultimately, the developers decided that familiar characters benefit greatly from detailed models, revised proportions, and a stronger visual identity. Naturally, players will decide if they prefer the original N64 owl or this elaborate new version.
