2019 iPhones may ship with 18W Fast charger in its box

Apple faced severe criticism last year because of shipping a $1,100 iPhone with a small, slow and sub-power 5W charger. However, things are about to change as according to a reputable Apple news leaker Japanese blog Mac Otakara, the 2019 iPhones will be shipping with an 18W Fast charger.

Apple’s strategy towards fast charging has been confusing, to say the least. Despite adding fast charging support (50% charge in 30 min via USB-C) to iPhone 8, iPhone X, and iPhone XS, Apple has continued to add the slow and archaic 5W power adapter and lightning to USB-A cable as native accessories for iPhones for many years.

Unfortunately, the customers had to spend an extra $48 to buy a standalone 18W USB-C power adapter and lightning to USB-C cable to take advantage of fast charging. However, this news (if true) is a welcoming change for iPhone users. It should be mentioned that last year a similar rumor spread the internet which suggested that the 2018 iPhones will be shipping wit 18W chargers. However, the chargers instead shipped with the 2018 iPad Pros instead of the 2018 iPhones. MacRumors said:

Last year, we heard a similar rumor about Apple bundling a faster 18W USB-C power adapter with 2018 iPhones, but it ended up being for 2018 iPad Pro models. This is the second time Mac Otakara has shared this rumor in as many months, so hopefully, there is truth to it this time around.

The report also claimed that the 2019 iPhones will be coming with a triple lens camera which has also been verified with several other leaks from reputable sources. This was on the cards since Apple used to be the industry leader in the smartphone category, however, recent innovations in computational photography by Google and superb hardware integration by Huawei and Samsung has put Apple on the back-foot. If the latest results and camera benchmarks are any indication, then the triple lens set-up is the future for all flagship smartphones.

It is pertinent to mention that iPhones are one of the worst performers in night-time photography. Google’s night sight and Huawei’s night mode have shown that there is a whole new camera department that modern day smartphones can now work and improve on. Whether Apple will follow the suit and introduce better night-time photography, we’ll have to wait for further leaks to confirm that.

It seems that Apple is trying to regain the losses that it suffered last year by introducing long-awaited features (triple-lens) and accessories (fast charger) in its latest iPhones. Whether these changes will help iPhones sales boost? Only time will tell.
