Tech giant Google has quietly published the price of Veo 2, their newest artificial intelligence video-generating model, which was launched at the end of last year. An hour of AI-generated video will cost $1,800, or $30 per minute, at a rate of 50 cents per second.
Google DeepMind researcher Jon Barron provided an interesting comparison with the costs of traditional filmmaking to put these figures into context. In comparison to Veo 2, which cost 50 cents per second, Marvel’s $356 million blockbuster “Avengers: Endgame” had an average cost of about $32,000 per second of finished footage.
Although it’s interesting to compare the two, it’s important to remember that Veo 2 can only handle shorter videos for the time being; Google has been emphasizing its ability to create clips longer than two minutes. Customers usually won’t use every second of generated video, which makes Veo 2’s real-life use considerably different from conventional filmmaking.
Google’s rival OpenAI has gone in a different direction with their Sora AI video model; it is available through a $200/month ChatGPT Pro subscription.
Improving visual clarity and bringing a deeper understanding of physics are only two of the many ways in which Veo 2 improves upon its predecessor. The enhanced video quality is a result of sharper images and more complex textures, which are particularly noticeable in fast-paced scenarios.
