Punjab Introduces New Vehicle Registration Rules

LAHORE: The Punjab government has amended the Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965, allowing vehicles registered in other provinces to be re-registered in Punjab. The new policy will take effect next month, with all necessary rules and procedures already finalized.

Excise officials state that people who own cars in Sindh, Islamabad, and other provinces can now move their registrations to Punjab as long as they get a “No-Objection Certificate” (NOC) from their home motor registration authorities.

The fee for re-registration will be less than the fee for new registration, so it is an affordable choice.

Furthermore, to avoid double taxation, car owners in Sindh and Islamabad can remit their token taxes to Punjab. The government intends to implement e-pay services to facilitate digital payments for re-registration in the subsequent phase.

According to Umar Sher Chattha, director general of the Punjab Excise and Taxation, the program will streamline the registration process for residents and bring in more revenue for the province.

Some vehicle owners and dealers perceive the change as a positive development; others are worried about potential procedural challenges. Once the policy takes effect, the government aims to address any challenges and ensure a seamless transition.
