Reddit explained that the traditional member count often fails to represent a community’s true vibrancy because users don’t need to be subscribed to post or comment. Many accounts may be members of a subreddit but are no longer active, causing the static number to misrepresent the level of current discussion. The new metrics, therefore, offer a more reliable signal of which communities are currently active and lively.
