In a major move set to reshape connectivity in northern Pakistan, the federal government has approved construction of the new N-15 highway, a modern route designed to offer a faster and safer alternative to the Karakoram Highway. The landmark decision promises to boost trade, tourism, and strategic access from Mansehra all the way to the Chinese border.

GOVERNMENT APPROVAL & PROJECT OVERVIEW

The approval came during a high level NHA meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, confirming that the highway will link Mansehra, Naran, Jhalakhand, and Chilas, significantly reducing travel distance and improving year-round movement, especially during winter.

Abdul Aleem Khan called the project “unique in terms of trade, tourism, and defense,” adding that the planned speed limits of 60–80 km/h will ensure smooth commercial flow and safer travel conditions even during harsh weather.

MODERN AMENITIES & DESIGN FEATURES

According to official briefings, the N-15 will be developed under a public private partnership model, featuring resorts, hotels, lakes, and shopping areas along the scenic route, turning it into a new tourism corridor.

The highway will largely follow a 4-lane bilateral design to accommodate future increases in traffic while maintaining international construction standards.

An official present in the meeting stated,

“This project will provide world class infrastructure with a focus on safety, accessibility, and long term national needs.”

ECONOMIC & STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE

The N-15 is expected to play a vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s trade links with Central Asia, supporting defense mobility, and boosting the tourism-driven economy of northern regions. Local communities are projected to benefit through increased business opportunities and improved access.

The minister confirmed that the project is targeted for completion within two years, with strict monitoring to ensure global construction and safety benchmarks.
