Authorities have stepped up security and traffic monitoring in the federal capital by installing m-tag readers at 11 locations and surveillance cameras at 14 key points across Islamabad. The move aims to strengthen vehicle identification and control entry into the city through a centralized monitoring system.
Police said the Safe City Authority supervised the installation of the m-tag readers and cameras, which work with m-tags fitted by the Frontier Works Organization with support from the capital administration. The devices have been mounted on newly installed poles and linked directly to the Safe City system for real-time monitoring.
Locations Covered
M-tag readers and cameras have been installed at major routes and sensitive locations including Faizabad, D-Chowk, Zero Point, Ninth Avenue, Bari Imam, NADRA Headquarters, G-14 N5 entry, Marriott Hotel, Adventure Inn Garden Avenue, Gandum Godown on IJP Road and Margalla Iran Avenue. Additional cameras have been placed at the Foreign Office, Bhara Kahu Bridge and the E-9 entry.
Officials said the system scans vehicle m-tags and registration plates, issuing alerts in case of mismatches and identifying vehicles operating without valid m-tags. All cameras are currently online except those installed at the E-9 entry at PAF, which are yet to be fully connected.
The development follows earlier statements by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who said no vehicle would be allowed to enter Islamabad without an e-tag. He made the remarks after a suicide attack near the Judicial Complex on November 11, underscoring the government’s push to tighten security and regulate vehicle movement.
