The federal government has officially decided to extend the electronic vehicle tagging (E-Tags) system to motorcycles in the capital. This move marks the next phase of Islamabad’s digital vehicle monitoring programme. Consequently, the district administration shared these details today in a written reply to the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication.
Technical Infrastructure & Real-Time Tracking
The authorities are currently installing RFID-based E-Tag readers at key locations across the city. Safe City Islamabad is implementing the project in coordination with the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO). Meanwhile, the Islamabad Police is supervising the entire operation.
This infrastructure allows for real-time monitoring and tracking of all tagged vehicles. Furthermore, the E-Tag system is now integrated with the Excise and Taxation Department. This integration enables real-time data sharing through a secure and encrypted network. FWO has provided the technical deployment and operational support for all issuance centres.
E-Tags to Close Security Gaps
The Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control, alongside the ICT Administration and FWO, launched this initiative to improve vehicle screening. By extending the system to motorcycles, authorities aim to close existing surveillance gaps. Additionally, the project intends to improve traffic discipline and strengthen overall security in the federal capital.
Currently, multiple M-Tag and E-Tag issuance centres and booths are operational to facilitate registration. According to official data, the installation drive began on November 14, 2025. As of December 7, 2025, a total of 63,329 vehicles have already been equipped with these electronic tags.
The expanded system ensures a more robust entry management process for Islamabad. Because the system tracks movement in real-time using these E-Tags, law enforcement can now maintain better surveillance over the city’s traffic. Authorities believe these electronic tags will significantly enhance the efficiency of vehicle verification and law enforcement across the capital.
