DISCOs Respond to NEPRA: Net Metering Applications Are Open
Recent reports suggested a halt on new net metering applications across Pakistan. These rumours prompted the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to take notice. However, sources from Power Distribution Companies (DISCOs) have clarified the situation.
DISCOs explicitly stated that they have not stopped registering new net metering applications. Instead, the process has undergone a significant digital transformation.
DISCOs Shift to PITC Online Portal
According to DISCOs’ sources, the companies have prepared a formal response regarding the registration issues. The core change is procedural. Authorities are now instructing consumers to apply through an online portal rather than submitting manual applications.
New consumers must now utilise the Power Information Technology Company (PITC) Net Metering Portal. This shift aims to streamline the user experience. When a consumer applies via the online portal, the system immediately generates a Registration Number and a Receiving Date. Consequently, applicants receive instant confirmation, removing the uncertainty often associated with manual paperwork.
Innovation Over Corruption
The move to digitisation is not just about convenience. DISCOs’ sources highlighted that the primary objective of the online portal is to introduce innovation and transparency into the energy sector.
By removing manual handling, the companies aim to eliminate corruption. The digital trail ensures that applications are tracked accurately from the moment of submission. Therefore, the “halt” observed by some users is simply a transition to a more transparent, tech-driven system.
