Karachi Launches Massive Road Upgrade Project Worth Rs 4 2 Billion

Karachi has approved a major infrastructure boost as the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) sanctioned Rs 4.2 billion to rehabilitate and beautify four of the city’s busiest roads, aiming to ease traffic flow, fix long-standing sewerage issues, and add green belts across key corridors.

The decision was approved by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab during a meeting at the KMC head office. The project targets Rashid Minhas Road, S.M. Taufique Road, Sir Shah Suleman Road, and Pehalwan Goth Road—routes that carry heavy daily traffic and connect important commercial and residential zones.

According to officials, Rs 1.12 billion has been allocated for Rashid Minhas Road, Rs 429 million for S.M. Taufique Road, Rs 574 million for Sir Shah Suleman Road, and Rs 1.9 billion for Pehalwan Goth Road.

KMC officials said the plan goes beyond simple resurfacing.

“This is a complete rehabilitation initiative focused on safer travel, better drainage, and a cleaner urban look,” an official stated.

The work includes fixing sewerage problems, redesigning traffic layouts, improving lane markings, and developing green belts along the roads to enhance the city’s environment.

Karachi’s major roads have faced repeated damage due to heavy traffic, poor drainage, and lack of timely maintenance. In recent months, the city administration has emphasized long-term road solutions instead of temporary repairs. This project aligns with KMC’s broader effort to modernize urban infrastructure and reduce daily commuting problems for citizens.
