Pakistan Aims For 60 Renewable Energy By 2030

Pakistan is rapidly advancing its clean energy transition, with renewables now accounting for 53% of total electricity generation. The country has set a target of 60% renewable energy in the power mix by 2030.

By the end of 2025, Pakistan reached 12 gigawatts of off-grid solar capacity and over 6 gigawatts of net-metered solar, making it one of the world’s fastest-growing solar markets.

Programs like the Punjab Solar Panel Scheme 2026 are providing free or subsidized solar systems to low-income households, improving energy access and restoring electricity in flood-affected areas.

At the 16th International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly, Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, reaffirmed the 60% target and called for increased international financing, regional cooperation, and recognition of green technologies like energy storage and green hydrogen as global public goods.

She also emphasized Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to the Paris Agreement and the need for sustained technical and financial support to build a resilient, low-carbon future.
