Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has urged social media platforms to ensure the responsible use of artificial intelligence, stressing that all AI-generated content must be clearly labeled to curb the spread of misinformation.
Addressing iVerify’s event titled “Can Facts Survive AI? Fighting Misinformation Together,” organised by the Centre for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ) at IBA Karachi, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar emphasised the need for ethical and positive use of artificial intelligence on digital platforms.
“I think AI needs to be used in a positive manner,” Tarar said, warning that unchecked use of emerging technologies could undermine public trust and distort facts online. He called on social media companies to take responsibility by clearly identifying AI-generated material so users can distinguish between authentic and synthetic content.
The minister highlighted that transparency in AI use is becoming critical as deepfakes, synthetic images, and automated text increasingly shape online discourse. He stressed that labeling AI-generated content would help users make informed judgments and reduce the impact of misinformation.
The event marked two years of iVerify, a fact-checking initiative, and the launch of its latest report on AI and misinformation, which examines how artificial intelligence is being used to spread false narratives and how such risks can be mitigated. The report is publicly available on iVerify’s website and aims to support journalists, policymakers, and digital platforms in tackling AI-driven disinformation.
Experts at the event noted that Pakistan, like many other countries, is facing growing challenges from AI-powered misinformation, especially during political and social developments, making regulation and awareness increasingly important.
