Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a major initiative to modernize public transport across the province with the introduction of the T-Cash Card and 1,500 electric buses. This move aims to provide cashless, eco-friendly travel options for commuters while improving mobility and reducing pollution in major cities like Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad.
The Punjab government has been gradually rolling out electric buses since late 2025. The cabinet recently approved the procurement of an additional 1,000 buses to expand the network further. Alongside this, the T-Cash Card allows commuters to access all mass transit services, including Metro, Orange Line, Speedo, and Electro buses, using a single smart card that also functions as a debit card for daily transactions. Special versions of the card are offered for students with free or discounted travel.
Officials highlight that both projects are fully operational and actively promoted across Punjab. The initiative is part of a broader plan to modernize public transport, enhance commuter convenience, and promote sustainable mobility in the province.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized, “These initiatives will make daily travel smoother, eco-friendly, and accessible for all citizens while reducing traffic congestion and pollution.”
The government’s focus on cashless, green travel aligns with global trends in sustainable urban transportation, positioning Punjab as a leader in eco-conscious public transit solutions in Pakistan.
The T-Cash Card is also compatible with digital payments, enabling seamless transactions at stores and for other services. Punjab’s move is expected to not only modernize travel but also create job opportunities in electric vehicle maintenance and smart card services.
