Samsung is best known for its smartphones and TVs. However, behind the scenes, the company has also been working on the future of mobile networks. This week, Samsung shared an important update from its 6G research efforts.
The company confirmed that it has successfully tested a key technology expected to power future 6G networks. Samsung is not just a consumer electronics brand. It also develops advanced telecommunications network equipment and works closely with global operators.
For this latest trial, Samsung partnered with KT Corporation. Together, they tested extreme multiple-input multiple-output, or X-MIMO, technology in the 7GHz band. During the test, they recorded peak download speeds of 3Gbps.
The breakthrough came from an ultra-high-density antenna system. This system includes four times more antennas than previous generations. Yet, it maintains roughly the same physical size. In other words, performance improves without increasing the size of the hardware.
X-MIMO is considered one of the core building blocks of 6G. Right now, the 7GHz band is viewed as a strong candidate for future 6G networks. It offers a solid balance between coverage and capacity. At the same time, it operates within the millimeter wave spectrum, which enables faster data transmission.
To make the results more realistic, researchers streamed eight data streams from a base station to a user device. KT helped recreate outdoor network conditions during the trial. This approach ensured that the test reflected real-world scenarios.
There is still time before 6G becomes commercially available. Even so, Samsung continues to make steady progress. With advances like X-MIMO, the company is quietly laying the groundwork for the next generation of wireless connectivity.
