The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially partnered with Meta. Together, they are rolling out a new security mechanism. This initiative aims to stop the rising WhatsApp hacking incidents across Pakistan. Meta agreed to implement this system following intense concerns over account takeover cases.
The new system introduces a dual One-Time Password (OTP) setup called “Meta OTP”. Consequently, a second OTP automatically generates exactly three minutes after the first code. Often, scammers trick users into sharing their initial code. However, if a user realizes their first OTP is compromised, they can simply enter the secondary password. By doing so, they immediately regain control of their account from unauthorized access.
Recently, authorities reported a massive surge in WhatsApp account takeovers. Fraudsters rely heavily on social engineering tactics to execute these attacks. For instance, they impersonate courier staff or customer service agents to steal OTP codes. Once they gain access, these scammers message the victim’s saved contacts. Subsequently, they demand money and carry out identity-based financial fraud. Therefore, the regulator urgently introduced these robust preventive measures.

Currently, PTA and Meta have completed their technical discussions. Meanwhile, final consultations will conclude shortly. As a result of these talks, Pakistan will be the very first country to launch this security feature to curb WhatsApp hacking for good. Afterward, Meta plans to expand this dual OTP system to other countries worldwide.
