Key roads in Karachi remained closed for the third consecutive day on Wednesday as authorities tightened security following violent protests earlier this week. The closures, affecting major roads came after demonstrations outside the US consulate left 11 people dead and several injured.
Shipping containers, barriers, and heavy police and Rangers deployment have made commuting across the city difficult.
Barriers were placed at Mai Kolachi crossing and PIDC Bridge, preventing general traffic from accessing Jinnah Bridge and Mai Kolachi. Only residents and office-goers showing their national identity cards are being allowed through certain areas. Authorities have also sealed the route from MT Khan Road to PIDC Road, while alternate paths through Clifton Bridge and Saddar are recommended.
Traffic congestion has been severe on II Chundrigar Road, one of the city’s main business hubs. Traffic police and local authorities are stationed at multiple checkpoints, guiding commuters and responding to queries through the helpline 1915.
Residents near Bilawal House and Boat Basin have been advised to use alternative routes, such as through Metropole and II Chundrigar Road, or via Kutiyana Memorial Hospital. Authorities stress that closures are temporary but necessary to ensure public safety.
The protests were triggered by the assassination of Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which led to demonstrations in multiple cities, including Karachi. The unrest reflects the deep emotional and political sensitivities surrounding international events in local communities.
