Telegram vanished from the Apple App Store across all regions between August 3 and August 4, 2026. Users could not download the popular messaging app, and App Store pages displayed errors showing the app as unavailable. Meanwhile, existing installations on devices continued to function normally.
Initially, neither Apple nor Telegram offered an official explanation for the sudden takedown. Unverified reports hinted at a temporary content policy issue. Today, official statements confirmed those rumors.
Apple briefly removed the app after a standard review uncovered a severe violation. The platform hosted content that violated Apple’s strict guidelines prohibiting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). According to an official statement circulating on X, Apple took immediate action upon discovering the illegal material. The tech giant strictly enforces its content policies, leaving zero room for CSAM on its storefront.
Fortunately for users, the ban ended quickly as Telegram developers acted promptly to resolve the issue. They removed the violating content completely. Furthermore, developers tracked down and permanently banned the user who posted the material.
Following this rapid cleanup, Apple officially restored Telegram to the App Store. Users can now search for and download the app normally.
Despite the quick resolution, both companies remain mostly quiet regarding the specifics of the incident. Reportedly, an Apple spokesperson did not respond to the media requests for further comment on the guideline violation.
Similarly, Telegram ignored formal press inquiries for an explanation. Instead, the company simply took to X and posted:
