The United States Embassy in Islamabad has temporarily suspended routine consular services on Friday, March 6, citing security concerns linked to possible protests across Pakistan. The move comes as US authorities restrict the movement of their personnel in the country as a precaution. While regular services remain halted, the embassy says emergency assistance will still be available for US citizens.
In a security advisory, the embassy said its Consular Section would remain closed for routine matters such as visa services and other appointments. Officials explained that the decision was taken due to anticipated demonstrations in different parts of the country.
The advisory noted that the movement of all US personnel in Pakistan has been limited as part of precautionary security measures. However, embassy staff will continue to respond to emergency consular requests if the need arises.
The embassy also urged American citizens living in or visiting Pakistan to remain cautious. US nationals were advised to stay alert, follow local news, and avoid areas where large public gatherings or protests may take place.
Citizens were further encouraged to keep a low profile, carry valid identification at all times, and cooperate with local law enforcement authorities if required. The advisory also recommended reviewing personal security plans to ensure preparedness in case the situation changes.
In addition, the embassy asked American citizens to ensure that their registration with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) remains updated. The program allows US authorities to share safety alerts and important information with citizens abroad.
The embassy said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and advised citizens to keep checking their emails and local media for updates regarding consular appointments and future operations.
