HBO has released the first official trailer for its highly anticipated Harry Potter television series, confirming that the show will premiere on Christmas Day 2026, months earlier than the 2027 date that had been previously announced. The reveal was made at an event in London celebrating the launch of HBO Max in the UK and Ireland.
The first season is officially titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, using the original British title of J.K. Rowling’s debut novel rather than the American “Sorcerer’s Stone.” It will run eight episodes and adapt the first book in its entirety. Each subsequent season will cover one book, with the full seven-season run expected to take approximately 10 years to complete. Actors signed to the project are committed for the entire duration.
The two-minute trailer introduces audiences to a fresh retelling of Harry’s origin story. It opens with Aunt Petunia telling Harry he is a normal boy and needs to start acting like one, then moves through familiar beats: the cupboard under the stairs, Dudley’s bullying, Petunia cutting Harry’s hair, the arrival of the Hogwarts letter, and Hagrid’s appearance to deliver the news that changes everything. Harry runs through Platform 9 3/4, boards the Hogwarts Express, and glimpses the castle for the first time. The trailer also teases the Sorting Hat ceremony, Harry receiving his wand, Quidditch scenes complete with embroidered team cloaks, and a Christmas snowball fight that has never been depicted on screen before.
The series is set faithfully in the 1990s, matching the books’ original timeline. The new take on the original movies claims to be even more faithful to the book source material than the previous adaptation.

The cast represents a complete reimagining. Newcomer Dominic McLaughlin, 11, plays Harry Potter. Arabella Stanton takes on Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley. All three are largely unknown actors with minimal prior credits.
The adult cast, however, is loaded with established names. John Lithgow plays Albus Dumbledore. Janet McTeer is Minerva McGonagall. Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid. Paapa Essiedu takes over the role of Severus Snape from the late Alan Rickman. Additional cast members include Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as Petunia and Vernon Dursley, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley. Voldemort has not yet been cast. HBO chairman Casey Bloys confirmed they have not found the actor for the role.
The show is being written and showrun by Francesca Gardiner of Succession, with Game of Thrones veteran Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. Both serve as executive producers alongside Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Bronte Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. Hans Zimmer is composing an original score, replacing the iconic musical identity established by John Williams in the original films.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will premiere on Christmas Day 2026 on HBO and stream exclusively on HBO Max globally, including Pakistan.
