Finland has decided to shut down its embassy in Islamabad this summer, marking another closure just two years after reopening the mission in 2022.
According to diplomatic sources, the embassy will continue operations until a final closure date is officially announced. The decision has been attributed to “strategic and operational reasons.”
Finland had resumed its diplomatic presence in Pakistan after nearly a decade-long gap, but has now opted to wind down operations once again. The embassy currently provides limited consular services, with most visa and passport matters already handled by Finnish missions abroad, particularly in Abu Dhabi.
The move follows a similar decision by Sweden, which closed its embassy in Pakistan indefinitely in 2023 citing security concerns.
In addition to Pakistan, Finland has also announced plans to close its embassies in Afghanistan and Myanmar, citing the same operational and strategic considerations.
Despite the announcement, the Islamabad mission will remain functional until further notice, with authorities yet to confirm the exact shutdown timeline.
