The Sindh government just issued a formal notification introducing strict austerity measures. Authorities enforced revised operating hours for markets, restaurants, and marriage halls across the province. Furthermore, these restrictions apply seven days a week, including weekends. The Home Department took this step as part of a broader austerity policy. Consequently, the government aims to conserve fuel during the global crisis triggered by the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran.
Revised Schedule for Businesses
Officials divided the new market timings based on the district type. Meanwhile, eateries and event venues face strict operational windows.
| Business Type | Divisional Headquarters (e.g., Karachi) | Other Districts |
|---|---|---|
| Shops, Markets & Shopping Malls | Close by 09:00 PM | Close by 08:00 PM |
| Restaurants, Hotels & Food Outlets | 07:00 PM to 11:30 PM (Dinner only) | 07:00 PM to 11:30 PM (Dinner only) |
| Marriage Halls & Banquets | 08:00 PM to 12:00 Midnight | 08:00 PM to 12:00 Midnight |
Note: Home delivery and takeaway services face no restrictions. They will operate normally.
Exemptions to the Sindh Austerity Measures
The provincial government exempted several essential services from these early closures. Therefore, the following businesses will bypass the restrictions:
- Tandoors (standalone shops)
- Milk & Dairy Shops
- Bakeries
- Medical Stores & Pharmacies
- Medical Laboratories, Clinics & Hospitals
- Fuel Stations
Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners will ensure strict implementation. Moreover, the Sindh Police will support them in their respective areas of responsibility.
Federal Austerity Measures
The global fuel crisis prompted sweeping changes nationwide. Initially, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced federal energy conservation measures on March 9. He introduced a four-day workweek for government offices to conserve fuel. Additionally, he directed 50% of government staff to work from home and closed schools for two weeks. Banks, however, continued normal operations.
Later, on April 6, the federal government mandated that markets nationwide close by 8:00 PM. They also restricted eateries and marriage halls to a 10:00 PM closure. At that time, Sindh delayed implementation to consult local stakeholders. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah met with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI). Finally, following these consultations, Sindh issued today’s tailored notification. Previously, on April 5, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had already implemented similar 8:00 PM market closures.
