YouTube has officially announced a price hike for its Premium subscription in the United States. Consequently, many furious fans are already canceling their ad-free service.
Currently, the platform offers highly requested features. For example, the subscription completely removes pre-video and mid-roll ad breaks. Furthermore, subscribers can download videos for offline viewing and play background audio on locked mobile devices. However, users paying for these perks will soon face a noticeable spike in their monthly fees.
New YouTube Premium Subscription Rates Explained
Many subscribers recently received emails confirming the increased rates. Specifically, users who subscribed through the official YouTube website will see their monthly bill jump from $13.99 to $15.99. Meanwhile, third-party subscriptions will cost even more. For instance, Apple users reported their rates skyrocketing to $20.99 per month. Additionally, the YouTube Premium Family Plan will increase to $26.99 monthly.
However, YouTube Premium prices remain the same in Pakistan. The Individual Plan still costs PKR 479 per month, and the Family Plan costs PKR 899 per month. At this point, it is not known whether these price hikes will also hit Pakistan or not. Further updates are awaited.
YouTube did not provide an exact start date for this change. Instead, the company noted that the new pricing will appear on the next billing statement.
Mounting Backlash & Streaming Trends
This sudden change has sparked intense backlash. Consequently, many users refuse to support another rate increase and are actively canceling their plans. Furthermore, subscribers pointed out that YouTube Premium now costs more than traditional streaming services like Netflix. In response, YouTube did not offer a detailed explanation. The official emails only stated that the company “does not make these decisions lightly.”
Interestingly, this price hike follows a string of recent ad controversies. In March, Google launched unskippable 30-second ads on the YouTube TV app. Moreover, the platform recently initiated a significant push against adblockers. Occasionally, this aggressive crackdown backfired and created playback issues for Premium users utilizing third-party apps.
Finally, YouTube is not alone in raising subscriber costs. Just last month, Netflix increased its standard ad-free service from $17.99 to $19.99 per month. Similarly, Disney+ enforced multiple price hikes last year and plans to merge with Hulu in 2026. Ultimately, streaming services continue to grow more expensive with each passing month, forcing fans to pay a premium for their favorite online content.
