Work on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line in Karachi has slowed significantly, with several sections of the route showing little to no construction activity, raising fresh concerns over project management and oversight.
The project is divided into two major segments: one stretching from Airport Signal to Mosamiyat, and the other from Mosamiyat to Numaish. The latter, which is larger and more complex, continues to face repeated delays and operational challenges.
The Mosamiyat to Numaish section had previously experienced a prolonged halt last year due to payment disputes between contractors and authorities. The matter eventually required court intervention before work resumed. Despite assurances that the issue had been resolved, progress has once again weakened.
Recent observations reveal minimal activity along key portions of the route. Several sites appear inactive, with only a limited number of workers present and heavy machinery standing idle, indicating a near suspension of construction work.
In particular, development between Hasan Square and Nipa remains stalled due to the ongoing installation of the K-IV water pipeline, further complicating timelines. Even in areas where equipment is available, there is little evidence of active work being carried out.
The repeated slowdowns have sparked concerns regarding administrative efficiency and project execution. Meanwhile, residents of Karachi continue to face traffic congestion, disrupted commuting routes, and growing uncertainty about when the long-delayed project will finally be completed.
