YouTube is developing a Clear Screen option within the Shorts viewer menu to hide on-screen function buttons. The update aims to remove all on-screen icons and text enabling viewers to get a full unimpeded content experience.
The Clear Screen feature is already available on competing short-form video platforms including TikTok and Instagram. TikTok lets users clear the viewing window of function buttons by long-pressing the screen and selecting Clear Display. Meanwhile, Instagram Reels users can do this by selecting the View Full Screen option from the control menu.
These options ensure an uncluttered viewing experience without video elements being obscured by on-screen buttons and descriptions. YouTube Shorts have become one of the key growth drivers for the platform according to company data. Consequently, Shorts are now being viewed over 200 billion times per day on average up from 70 billion in 2024.
The feature aims to enhance user engagement by providing a cleaner distraction-free interface for short-form content consumption. Given that it is already available on competitor platforms YouTube appears to be following industry standards. Furthermore, the update aligns with user expectations for short-form video viewing experiences across social media platforms.
YouTube has not officially confirmed the feature for public release yet, which makes the Clear Screen option still in internal development. As of writing, the testing phases do not have an announced timeline for rollout.
