Meta launched Meta AI chatbot integration on Threads giving the assistant Grok-like functionality to reply to posts with context. The company created an official @meta.ai Threads account users can chat with alongside other conversations. However, the feature described as an early beta is rolling out to Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore first.
As explained by Meta:
“If you’re using Threads there and your account is public, just tag @meta.ai in a post or reply and you’ll get an answer back. You can ask for anything from where to stream a movie to recipes for dishes you come across on Threads.”
The premise sounds similar to Grok’s role on X where users ask questions like “Is this real?” or “Explain this.” Meta suggests users could ask questions like “why are people talking about the World Cup this month?” Furthermore, Meta AI will be able to publicly reply with contextual information directly in Threads conversations.
All @meta.ai responses on Threads will be text-only for now and viewable by anybody via the profile. Meta specified that Threads users can mute the @meta.ai profile or use the “Not interested” option on posts. Meanwhile, users can also hide Meta AI replies appearing directly under their own posts according to company statements.
Threads users discovered they cannot block the Meta AI account unlike other Threads profiles sparking immediate backlash. The @meta.ai account’s initial post was met with angry replies from users demanding blocking options. Consequently, the inability to block became the top trending topic on the platform hours after launch.
The update marks the first integration of AI tools into the Threads experience providing another access point for models. Meta is also rolling out expanded access to Muse Spark via AI options across all its platforms.
