The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has taken strong notice of prolonged and unscheduled power outages in Karachi and has directed K-Electric to submit a detailed report explaining the ongoing electricity disruptions across the city.
According to official details, the regulator expressed serious concern over widespread consumer complaints regarding extended blackouts during the ongoing heatwave and sought an explanation for the repeated outages affecting multiple neighborhoods.
NEPRA has also questioned K-Electric’s reported failure to adhere to its publicly announced load-management schedule, a situation that has further intensified difficulties for residents facing extreme summer temperatures.
Consumers from various parts of Karachi have reported hours-long unannounced power cuts, while many have also complained about delays in electricity restoration following technical faults and system breakdowns.
The prolonged outages have disrupted daily life and business activities across the city, particularly as electricity demand has surged due to increased use of cooling appliances during the peak summer season.
The regulator has instructed K-Electric to provide a comprehensive report detailing the causes of the ongoing load-shedding, operational challenges affecting supply, and corrective measures being implemented to improve service reliability and stabilize the power network.
NEPRA emphasized that accountability and improved performance are essential to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply for consumers in Pakistan’s largest metropolitan city.
The development comes amid recurring power supply challenges in Karachi, where rising electricity demand, infrastructure limitations, and operational issues continue to place pressure on the distribution network during the summer months.
The regulator’s intervention reflects growing concerns over service quality and increasing pressure on utility providers to minimize disruptions and enhance customer service standards across major urban centers.
K-Electric remains the primary electricity provider for Karachi, managing the generation, transmission, and distribution of power throughout the city and adjoining areas.
