Capcom kicked off Summer Game Fest 2026 with a massive reveal today. The long-rumored remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica is officially happening. Capcom titled this highly anticipated horror game Resident Evil Veronica. Furthermore, the developer confirmed a 2027 release window for PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S. Industry leaks also suggest an early 2027 launch.
A Darker Tone & Dual Perspectives
Capcom has a proven track record of remaking classic Resident Evil titles. This successful trend includes the acclaimed updates for Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4. Now, Resident Evil Veronica will adopt the darker, modernized atmosphere established by the recent Resident Evil 4 remake.
Additionally, the debut trailer confirmed a major gameplay mechanic. Players can choose between first-person and third-person perspectives. This system directly mirrors the options seen in Resident Evil Requiem.

Changes to the Original Resident Evil Code: Veronica Story
The new footage revealed significant changes to the game’s opening sequence. The trailer started with a first-person view of protagonist Claire Redfield visiting an older woman in France. Consequently, this expands upon the original storyline where Claire invaded Umbrella.
Based on the trailer, enemies seemingly kidnap Claire prior to her planned attack on Umbrella. Therefore, this narrative shift fast-tracks her arrival at Rockfort Island. This island serves as the primary setting for the bulk of the story.
Finally, the trailer offered quick glimpses of reimagined classic areas. Fans also spotted the villainous Alfred Ashford. However, it remains unclear if Capcom will retain his famously campy personality from the original game. Past titles like Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles heavily sanitized both Ashford and Claire’s obnoxious friend, Steve Burnside. We must wait for future trailers to see how Capcom handles these characters in the upcoming release.
