The Role of Mi-17 Helicopter in Pakistan Army Aviation
To understand the background, the Mi-17 is a Russian-designed medium twin-turbine transport helicopter. It offers excellent reliability and versatility. In fact, manufacturers design it specifically for high altitudes and hot weather conditions. This capability makes it highly suitable for the rugged northern terrains of Pakistan.
Currently, the Pakistan Army Aviation Corps operates a significant fleet of these utility helicopters. The military uses the Mi-17 for transport, logistics, search and rescue operations, and medical evacuations. For instance, the fleet played a massive role during the 2005 Kashmir earthquake relief efforts. It can carry up to 36 troops or 4 tons of cargo. Therefore, it remains a vital workhorse for the armed forces during both peacetime and combat support missions.
