The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued an important advisory for WhatsApp users. It warns that accounts tied to certain SIMs may become inaccessible. The affected SIMs include inactive, blocked, deactivated, or unregistered cards.
The regulator urged users to verify their linked number immediately. Users should confirm their WhatsApp number sits on an active, registered SIM. The PTA said this step protects chats, contacts, and account access. Failure to act could trigger sudden logouts and loss of control.
The PTA framed the issue around digital identity, not just connectivity. It said a mobile number is now a core part of a user’s digital identity. Accounts on invalid or inactive SIMs risk losing access to personal data. That includes chats, media, contacts, and account recovery options.
The authority laid out clear steps for users to follow. Those on inactive SIMs should switch to an active number without delay. Users should also complete biometric verification and SIM validation where needed. The PTA advised visiting the nearest franchise or customer service centre for help.
Several scenarios put accounts at risk, according to the advisory. A SIM may be deactivated after long inactivity or no recharge. A number may be registered under another person’s name. A SIM may also fail biometric verification or re-verification.
The advisory fits the PTA’s wider push on SIM governance. The regulator links proper registration to stronger digital security. It also ties verified SIMs to efforts against fraud and illegal numbers. The campaign slogan urges users to protect their WhatsApp and digital identity.
The PTA has not announced a fixed enforcement cutoff date. However, it urged proactive compliance to avoid service disruption. Users can check registered SIMs by texting their CNIC to 668. They can also use the PTA digital assistant for further guidance.
