Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models may become noticeably thicker than their predecessors, according to a new leak. The latest claim suggests that both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could gain around 2mm in thickness.
Rumors about the phones’ design have been conflicting for months. Dummy units that surfaced in April hinted that the iPhone 18 Pro lineup would be thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro series. However, a reliable tipster later claimed in June that the new devices would keep the same 8.75mm thickness as the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
That report did not last long. Just days later, another source said the iPhone 18 Pro would be around 2mm thicker than its predecessor. Now, the same source has repeated that claim. If the rumor proves correct, the iPhone 18 Pro could become more than 1cm thick. While that is technically possible, such a design would make the phone much thicker than recent iPhones.
Bigger Batteries and New Camera Could Increase Thickness
The expected design change may have a practical reason. Reports suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature a variable aperture main camera. This camera technology needs extra internal space. As a result, it could add more thickness to the devices.
The two phones are also expected to include larger batteries than last year’s models. Bigger batteries require more room, which further supports the idea of a thicker design.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether the reported 2mm increase is accurate. Apple has not confirmed any details about the iPhone 18 lineup. More leaks are likely to appear in the coming months, which should provide a clearer picture of Apple’s next premium smartphones.
