The PlayStation 6 (PS6) remains Sony’s worst-kept secret. Even though the company has not officially announced the next-gen hardware, real-world developments continually force them to reveal their hand. Just recently, a newly discovered patent surfaced online. Reportedly, the document filed in June 2026 outlines a major thermal upgrade over the current PS5.
Advanced Heat Pipe Design in PS6 Cooling System
The patent details a brand-new heat pipe design. This technology transfers heat away from internal components much faster than previous iterations. Consequently, the console maintains consistent cooling capacity. Furthermore, this new advanced cooling system remains highly efficient whether you stand the console upright or lay it horizontally.
Because of this dual-orientation support, the PS6 form factor will likely share structural similarities with the PS5. In fact, Sony specifically used PS5 imagery in the patent documents to hide the actual look of the new console. A more advanced cooling solution ultimately allows Sony to push the PS6 hardware further while keeping temperatures under control.
But Patents Are Just Concepts, Right?
Ultimately, fans must remember that this document remains just a patent. Tech companies frequently file design concepts that never reach the consumer market. Therefore, you should view this advanced cooling system as an idea Sony is currently exploring rather than a confirmed hardware feature. Regardless, gamers can reasonably expect significant thermal improvements whenever the PS6 finally hits the market.
While the cooling upgrade is notable, the most significant detail lies in the console’s physical media format. Reports indicate that the PS6 will likely launch as a strictly digital-only console. Sony plans to shut down PlayStation game disc production entirely in January 2028. Therefore, releasing a physical console in the Fall of 2027 makes no sense if none of its upcoming games feature disc support.
