The Sindh government is preparing to launch a women-only electric taxi service that will be operated by female drivers and exclusively serve female passengers, Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon announced.
Memon made the announcement during a meeting with a high-level delegation from the British High Commission at his residence.
The proposed e-taxi service aims to provide women with a safer and more convenient transportation option while also creating new employment opportunities for female drivers. The initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to improve women’s mobility and encourage their participation in social and economic activities.
The Sindh government is also working on the development of EV charging stations and other basic infrastructure to promote investment in electric vehicles across the province.
Memon further highlighted the government’s initiative to provide free pink electric scooters to working women and students, saying the program would make transportation more accessible and help strengthen women’s economic and social independence.
He also noted a significant rise in the number of women applying for driving licenses in Sindh. According to him, applications have increased from around 450 a few years ago to 25,000 today, reflecting a shift in traditional perceptions about women driving cars and motorcycles.
The minister said the Sindh government is committed to providing women with equal opportunities to advance in every field and supporting initiatives that promote their independence and empowerment.
