Sony Santa Monica officially delayed its upcoming game, God of War Laufey. The developer recently pushed the release date from February 16, 2027, to May 20, 2027. The studio shared the formal announcement on X. According to the announcement, the three-month delay allows the team to put the finishing touches on the project. Consequently, they want the game to reach its absolute fullest potential before launch.

A New Direction, Fan Controversies & Fresh Gameplay Mechanics
Initially, Sony announced God of War Laufey in June as a follow-up to 2022’s God of War Ragnarok. For the first time in series history, Kratos steps down as the main protagonist. Instead, players will control Faye, the deceased wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus. The new story follows Faye as she awakens in the land of Everywhen. Furthermore, she will encounter deities from completely new mythologies. These include Sekhmet from Egyptian mythology and Begtse from Mongolian mythology.
Unsurprisingly, replacing Kratos proved heavily divisive among longtime fans. Additionally, the inclusion of a gelatinous cosmic cube named Phranque caused further skepticism. Many players worry about the game’s tone compared to the franchise’s traditionally serious nature. However, Faye’s voice actor, Deborah Ann Woll, publicly defended the title and expressed a strong belief in its overall quality.
Despite the ongoing controversies, God of War Laufey introduces highly innovative gameplay mechanics. Faye utilizes a unique skill set completely different from Kratos. For instance, she boasts greater mobility that perfectly links ground and aerial attacks. Moreover, she wields the Golden Hand of the Jotnar. This powerful weapon lets her separate an enemy’s soul from its physical body. Subsequently, she can knock those detached souls into other enemies mid-combo.

Now, Until Dawn 2 stands as Sony’s primary PS5-exclusive release for early 2027. This sequel revives the horror series following its 2015 debut.
