Recently, WhatsApp is officially pulling the plug on older smartphones. The messaging giant has permanently ended support for devices running Android 5.0 and Android 5.1. Consequently, affected users face an immediate lockout unless they take action.
WhatsApp previously issued in-app alerts regarding this cutoff, a move first highlighted by WABetaInfo. Now, opening the app on an unsupported device triggers a strict pop-up notification. The warning explicitly states:
WhatsApp will no longer work on this device.
To regain access, users must now meet the new minimum software requirement of Android 6.0.
Why Did WhatsApp Drop Support?
It sounds aggressive, but the software in question is severely outdated. Android 5.0 (Lollipop) debuted in November 2014, and Android 5.1 followed in March 2015. These operating systems are well over a decade old. For context, the latest current software is Android 17.
These legacy operating systems sit far beyond their normal security-support lifespan. Therefore, they lack modern security updates. Maintaining compatibility with such old software heavily complicates development. Ending support gives WhatsApp the freedom to introduce advanced technical features that older hardware simply cannot handle.
Despite the age of the software, the cutoff impacts a massive number of people. In March 2026, Statcounter reported that Android 5.0 still held a 0.69% global market share. Out of 4.5 billion Android users worldwide, that translates to approximately 3 million affected individuals.
How to Save Your Chats
The restriction relies entirely on your operating system, not your phone’s brand or model. Therefore, you should immediately check your software version. Navigate to Settings > About Phone > Android Version.
If an update to Android 6.0 or higher is available, simply install it. Doing so will seamlessly restore your WhatsApp access. However, if your manufacturer never released an update beyond Android 5.1, you must purchase a newer smartphone to continue using the platform.
Before you retire your old device, you must secure your data. Go to WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. Ensure you create a recent backup locally or via Google Drive. You can easily transfer local Android backups to your new compatible smartphone.
iPhone Users Face a Similar Deadline
Android users are facing the heat today, but Apple users are next in line.
From November 30, 2026, WhatsApp will raise its minimum requirement for iPhones from iOS 15.1 to iOS 15.5. Fortunately, Apple users have a convenient loophole.
In May 2026, Apple released the iOS 15.8.8 update specifically for older hardware. This update comfortably exceeds the upcoming WhatsApp requirement. Therefore, users rocking the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, first-generation iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus are not automatically excluded.
To avoid the November cutoff, iPhone owners simply need to open ‘Settings’, tap ‘General’, and select ‘Software Update’ to install the latest software.
