X has launched a new privacy option for its messaging system. It lets users generate a unique number code for DMs. Consequently, people can connect without sharing personal phone numbers. The feature works within X’s updated X Chat messaging element.
The system works through a distinct numerical identifier. Specifically, users can generate a unique 10-digit X number. They can then share that code with selected people. As a result, it grants those people direct messaging access.
The feature primarily targets connections between non-followers. Profile visitors who are not mutual followers face a gate. To send a DM, they must enter the profile’s X number. This adds another security layer to X Chat messaging directly.
Notably, this access extends beyond just text messages too. Sharing the code also enables audio and video calls. Therefore, it opens a fuller communication channel selectively. Users retain tight control over who gets that access.
Importantly, users can refresh their number at any time. Updating the code instantly revokes previous access granted. This gives people ongoing control over their inbound messages. Consequently, they can manage connections flexibly over time.
The feature enables several practical real-world use cases. For instance, event organizers could invite attendees to message temporarily. They might then deactivate the code shortly afterward. This creates a limited window for relevant conversations.
It could also enable a degree of exclusivity. Celebrities, for example, could open DMs to select fans. They would simply share the code with chosen followers. Later, they could deactivate it once the moment passes.
The update builds on X’s broader messaging ambitions. X Chat already lets users message their followers directly. Users can also enable messages from anyone entirely. Ultimately, this number code adds another flexible access gate. X is currently rolling the feature out to users.
