Snorkel AI raised $350 million in Series E funding on September 22. The data startup tripled its valuation to $3.5 billion in just seventeen months. This remarkable growth reflects an urgent crisis consuming the AI industry globally. Frontier models now hunger for training data faster than companies can provide it.
Insight Partners and S32 led the round alongside existing investors Addition, Lightspeed, Greylock, GV, and Wells Fargo. The seven-year-old startup originally provided software automating manual data labeling tasks. However, Snorkel shifted strategy last year toward data-as-a-service, delivering completed datasets directly. This pivot proved transformative for company growth and margins significantly.
The hybrid approach combines synthetic data generated by Snorkel’s models with subject matter expert contributions. This strategy differs fundamentally from pure human labor marketplaces operating today. Snorkel’s annualized revenue run rate now stands at $375 million. This represents an eighteenfold increase over the previous twelve months alone. Such explosive growth underscores how desperately AI labs need training data access.
Competing data companies are experiencing similar trajectories now. Mercor achieved $2 billion in gross annualized revenue. Handshake crossed the $1 billion milestone earlier this year. Micro1 scaled to $500 million gross run rate recently.
However, these figures merit careful interpretation because these companies pay 60-70% directly to domain specialists doing the work. Snorkel operates differently through its hybrid model structure. Its payments to human experts land in cost of goods sold rather than inflating headline revenue metrics.
CEO Alex Ratner co-founded Snorkel following four years researching at Stanford’s AI lab. The company launched commercially in 2019 with this academic foundation. Since then, Snorkel built deep relationships with major AI labs and corporations worldwide.
As frontier models scale toward trillion-parameter scales, training data demand grows exponentially. Snorkel positioned itself perfectly to capture this expanding opportunity through innovative data strategies.
