Karachi’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project has moved closer to restarting construction on its delayed Lot 2 section after TransKarachi completed the first phase of bidding for a new construction contract. The 12.8-kilometer section, stretching from Numaish to Mosamiyat, is expected to take 18 months to complete after the new contract is awarded.
TransKarachi received bids on October 8 and expects to complete the evaluation process and award the contract within a month. The section includes flyovers, underpasses, elevated U-turns, dedicated bus lanes and 16 stations. The Sindh government cancelled the previous contract on April 21 due to construction delays, leaving major work on Lot 2 stalled.
The project has faced renewed scrutiny following the collapse of an elevated structure on University Road, which killed a man. TransKarachi said work at the affected sites had remained suspended since the previous contract was cancelled, while construction on Lot 1, covering the 9.4-kilometer stretch from Malir Halt to Mosamiyat, continues separately.
The main corridor is scheduled for completion by December 2026, while the extension to Malir Halt is expected to be completed by April 2027. Launched in March 2022 with funding from the Asian Development Bank, the overall BRT Red Line project now has a completion deadline of June 2028.
