Final Fantasy Resonance is officially a massive hit. Square Enix released the game on October 22, 2026. Gamers immediately flocked to the new title. The game quickly achieved an impressive peak player count. On the morning of Saturday, October 24, over 38,000 players jumped into the game simultaneously.
A Classic Turn-Based Experience
Square Enix’s Creative Studio 5 and Lancarse co-developed the title. Final Fantasy Resonance utilizes a beautiful HD-2D graphical style. This aesthetic closely mirrors the popular Octopath Traveler series. Furthermore, the game abandons the traditional Active Time Battle mechanic. Instead, it features a deeply tactical turn-based combat system. This combat style reminds many players of Final Fantasy 10. Consequently, players can actively alter the flow of battle with their spells and abilities.
The main narrative retells the first major story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Square Enix previously shut down this mobile title in 2025. Additionally, the developers introduced a new mechanic called Visions. Players can collect popular franchise characters like Cloud and Squall. These Visions aid the party during combat and teach them brand-new abilities.
Record-Breaking Steam Numbers by Final Fantasy Resonance
The player base continues to hold steady. Recent data shows active player counts hovering comfortably above 31,400. Therefore, Final Fantasy Resonance now holds the third-highest Steam peak concurrent total for the entire franchise. It only trails behind Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 14. Rebirth hit 40,564 players during its Steam port launch in January 2025. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 14 reached a massive 95,150 players during the Endwalker launch in December 2021.
Players genuinely love the new experience. Final Fantasy Resonance currently boasts an overwhelmingly positive reception. Initial data showed a 97% positive rating across 1,517 reviews. Updated metrics now reflect a 96.91% positive rating from over 2,200 user reviews. Consequently, this makes it the highest-rated Final Fantasy entry on Steam to date. While some users criticized the user interface, most fans praised the familiar yet fresh combat system.
The game is highly accessible across multiple platforms. Square Enix published it on all current-generation consoles. Furthermore, fans can purchase physical and digital editions for the Nintendo Switch 2. PC gamers can also enjoy the title seamlessly, as it is fully verified for the Steam Deck.
More Final Fantasy Content on the Horizon
The Final Fantasy franchise has a very busy schedule ahead. A special crossover event kicks off on October 28. Final Fantasy 14 will host the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series in a limited-time activity called Keybound Brawler. Players can participate in the Manderville Gold Saucer to earn unique cosmetic rewards. These rewards include glamour sets based on Tifa and Barret’s outfits.
This crossover event runs until the launch of the upcoming Evercold expansion for Final Fantasy 14. Square Enix will discuss more details about Evercold very soon. The developers plan to reveal a potential release date during the Tokyo FanFest this Halloween weekend.
